Dark Star first came to WCCO in 1986 to "file" reports from Canterbury Downs Racetrack, but his "dabbling" in the ponies dates back to his childhood attendance at county fair races with his grandfather. Contrary to a reported "experiment" within the CIA, Dark actually adopted the name Dark Star after slipping a friend a "Mickey" then filling in for his sports column at the Los Angeles Herald Examiner.
Dark who also saw duty in Vietnam, has been a doorman, a bartender, and a general manager of a Rock and Roll nightclub. He's also a golf pro (who isn't), a stockbroker on the floor of the Pacific Coast Stock Exchange, where he instituted the idea of using water-soluble, environmentally friendly notes. It didn't last; neither did the job.
He moved to the Twin Cities in 1980, worked as a substitute host at KSTP, then handicapped horses for the St. Paul Pioneer Press until Dark joined the 'CCO gang to do Canterbury Reports, and subsequently became host of the great WCCO Sports Night with Dark Star. Dark's irreverent charm and unique perspective, has been known to infuriate some while charming the rest. Dark also likes to trade the Euro dollar to relax.
