Drowning In Temperance River Not The First

A 45 year old Ramsey man has drowned in the Temperance River which flows into Lake Superior near Tofte.  The body of  Ari Sommerfeld was recovered from the river around noon Sunday.   He had been swimming in the river about 6:30 Saturday evening when a witness saw him being swept away in the current.   Two people died in the river about a year ago.......plus at least another four deaths since 1996.

Early Sunday afternoon Sommerfield's body was pulled from Lake Superior. No foul play is suspected. The Sheriff's Office says the Temperance River near Lake Superior is a very dangerous area to swim.

The Cook County Sheriff's Office and their Response Unit, Tofte First Responders, the Department of Natural Resources, the U.S. Coast Guard, Lake County rescue divers, St. Louis County Search and Rescue and Cook County Ambulance all responded to the emergency.
