Hey Gang
Steve Cannon was a real radio announcer. He knew how to keep you interested and want to tune in the next day. The world has lost a great talent.Don from Excelsior

So many memories. You were part of my life growing up, even though I didn't know it at the time. My mom and Dad's kitchen, driving with my mom and dad in the car...when i think back to those days, you are like a warm blanket. thank you.

The Cannon Mess - Was anything but messy
What a wonderful tribute to this radio icon who was anything but 'The Cannon Mess'. Steve Cannon (and friends) was entertaining, informed and extremely intelligent. Kudos to WCCO Radio who brought him to us for 26 years. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time. He's been missed by us for 12 years, I'm sure he'll be missed by you for a lifetime.

Basic Black Dress
I have grown up with Steve Cannon. My parents used to turn the radio WAY UP to the theme song to wake me up as a teen. It was horrible, I now laugh and think of them all when I hear that "music." I really believed all those characters were real people and what were they doing on the radio so early in the morning! I was too young to wear the basic black dress on Fridays, so one could go out after work for a drink or two and then ended up wearing white, felt bad about that! It has been such a please to hear him on Charlie Boone's show on Saturdays from Naples. We are all going to miss you Steve as you are a voice of the Twin Cities. Thanks for the laughs, as an adult, I get it now. I will continue to listen to WCCO because of you and the other great broadcasters. Sincerely, Cheryl

As we have to say goodbye to the voices of our youth, it was hard to hear that Steve Cannon had left us. We will forever miss his wit, and wisdom and that of his braintrust. Steve, Backlash, Ma, and Morgan, seem to be taking with them, radio as it should be. Hold on God, wait til you have to deal with these guys. Be ready to laugh, and hold on tight to your wallet when dealing with Morgan, and his heavenly prognostications

The Cannon Mess T-Shirt
One of my fond memories of Steve Cannon was the t-shirt I got with the caricatures of Steve, Morgan, Ma, and Back Lash imprinted on it. I wore it on a trip to Florida, and while walking out on the pier, someone (a total stranger) came up to me to ask if I was from the Twin Cities. He had noticed "The Gang" and commented "I never knew what they all looked like...now I do." He had lived in the Twin Cities and said he missed listening to Steve and The Gang. I, too will miss him greatly! His story-telling often got me laughing so hard I cried! Thanks for the memories Steve-O. Karyn Herrmann, Edina, MN

A Radio Great!
I will miss Steve Cannon. His program in the afternoon the best thing on radio. I enjoyed his banter with Mike Lynch, Sid Hartman, James St James and the many guests that would appear on his afternoon show. There will never be another "Cannon." Rest inpeace Steve!

Basic Black Dress
I have listened to WCCO forever. My parents used to turn the radio WAY UP when the dog song came on to wake me up as a teen. I laugh now and think of my parents and Steve-O now but it wasnt funny at the time! I really thought all his little Cannon's were real people and what were they doing on the radio at that hour.As I got older I remember the basic black dress on Fridays so the gals could go out after work. Unfortunately I wore white (nurse) and wasnt able to join the fun, should have called him! I have enjoyed hearing his broadcasts from Naples, the sports prognostications from Morgan. I guess I listened to more rock for awhile but do remember the drive home with Cannon. We will miss him dearly, and have since he retired. He was a brillant radio celebrity and a Twin Cities icon. Never will forget you Steve and all the laughs. Bless you. Cheryl

Thanks for everything Steve, Ma, Backlash and of course Morgan. I spent mary hours listening all through the day in Northwestern Wisconsin to Boone and Erickson, Jergen Nash, and everyone else on 'CCO from the time I was quite young, but Cannon always rounded out my day. In more recent years after Steve was retired by CBS, I quite happily found him on Saturday mornings just before 9. I would again tune in for those few minutes just to hear Morgan and him. Thanks Steve. I just can't say enough or find the right words.

My Cannon Mess T-Shirt in Florida
My fondest memory of Steve Cannon was the t-shirt I bought at the State Fair. It had caricatures of Steve and 'the gang', Morgan, Ma, and Back Lash. We were walking on the fishing pier and someone (a total stranger) asked me if I was from the Twin Cities. He said he never 'knew' what the others looked like, and now he did! He had retired to Florida and said he missed his show. There were also times when his story-telling made me laugh so hard that I cried! We will miss him greatly! Karyn and Rich Herrmann, Edina, MN

cannon
He was the person that started wcco daytime for us. We couldn't wait for the state fair to see him with James St James. It was so sad when he retired and it was still great to hear him and Morgan do their sports predictions throughout the years. Thanks for the memories.

A legend
Goodbye Steve... I got into radio because you made it look so easy. It ain't. God bless...

Missed him the day he left (many Octobers ago) Memories: 1. Theme song that sounded like it was recorded in the basement auditorium of a hundred-year-old Middle School 2. Steve recounts his search for stardom as he motors his 'brand new' (and I think it literally was) 1955 Plymouth Belvedere to Hollywood. With the warped overheating engine, and a hood that wouldn't close, etc etc. "Don't tell Fiat about that piece of junk .." he'd probably say. 3. His musings with Mike Lynch on a hot and relevant new TV pilot based on the then-popular "30 Something" which they called "60 Something". A precursor to everything Flomax and Depends ... that we're now barraged with...good lord... when he made himself laugh - you knew "that was funny".

Steve Cannon
I grew up with him. From the 70's till today, I'd love to listen to the Cannon Mess in the afternoon. I think he was one of the most gifted people I ever ran across. He was REAL. Warts and all. And he was sarcastic. But I liked him. I cried today for aman I never met in person and yet, feel that I've known for most of my 49 years. I loved Morgan's picks and I will definately miss him. He was from an era that has gone away. Bye Steve-o. I'll miss you. Al Bates of Minnetonka
04/07/2009 12:40PM
Gone but never to be forgotten
I listened to the Cannon Mess for many years as I drove home from work in downtown Minneapolis to Wayzata and I enjoyed it every day. Steve had to be the best radio voice that I ever heard. I know that like many others, I will miss the man with the golden voice. I think one of the things I liked best about Steve Cannon was that he always did it "his way". The folks "upstairs" will now get to enjoy Cannon, Ma, Lash, and Morgan. Rest in peace, you have earned it.
04/07/2009 12:40PM
Minnesota Import
I moved here in 1983 and started farming. The old tractor radio had no antenna, so of course 'CCO was the ONLY station it got. I became an instant fan of "those four characters" on in the afternoon. It took many months ,and a better radio, for me to figure out it was ALL Steve. In the last several years, I've had many occasions to travel to Naples, FL. I knew he had retired there for the colder months and whenever I went out running or to the beach or whatever, I always wore one of my numerous WCCO Radio shirts in the hope I'd run in to him and be able to say hi......... I'm gonna keep wearing them.
04/07/2009 12:49PM
Found a Friend
I came to Minnesota as a bride from Houston, Texas, to a little town that didn't even receive TV signals. That's when I found WCCO and all of it's talented characters. It filled my days as I knew few people and hadn't made friends yet. Thanks to Steve I kept my sanity and marriage.
04/07/2009 12:49PM
Mike
As I'm listening to others talk about him, I find it amusing that people didn't know that Cannon did those other voices. Actually I didn't know that he was the only guy in the booth for a few months myself. He was a very talented guy.
04/07/2009 12:49PM
That Voice...
Cannon was always on in the background when I was growing up - barking dogs, Backlash and Ma - it's not so much WHAT I remember as the general tone, and that he made you feel safe. There will never be another -
04/07/2009 12:53PM
Amazing guy
I find it amusing that other people didn't know that Cannon was the only guy in the booth. It took me awhile to catch on as well. What a talent.
04/07/2009 12:57PM
Star Struck
When I was about 9 or 10 my sister and I had a baseball cap made for Cannon with the name "Steve-o" stenciled on it. When we went to give it to him. He graciously accepted it but said to us, "You should save your money not spend it on me." I was so star struck I replied in a meek little voice "All we spend our money on is money" my sister elbows me and I corrected myself as if in a trance, "is food" Cannon still gazing down at me chuckled and said; "Well put young lady and thank you." I will never forget listening to the "Cannon Mess" as I grew up and then into my late twenties, I was sad when her retired and looked forward to anytime he would call in. I will truly miss his familiar voice and those of the "Gang". Cannon was one of a kind with four different personalities that many Minnesotans were lucky enough have for our own. I and my family will genuinely miss him.
04/07/2009 1:02PM
The Great Cannon
I heard Cannon on morning drive on KSTP. I didn't pick up right off that he was just one guy! When when he was fired I said, boy, if CCO doesn't pick him (them) up they're brain dead. The rest is history. Can't count the times the Mess perked me up after a hard day in the office, and Friday was always the best. Could not wait for the song and the prognostications. Cannon was the greatest. His retirement was heartbreaking, and I will miss him forever.

The Superior, WI connection
When I moved here in 90 to start my Sales career, I found this natural and original voice by looking for a channel other than a rock channel. I then found myself eargerly tuning in at 307 pm to hear the dog song. I later found out that Stevo's mother grew up on 12th and Hammond in Superior from lisenting to him. Then periodically, he would talk about Bud Grant and what street he grew up along with the adress. I recognized immdiately as a home that I delivered papers to in 1976. My father went to HS with Coach Grant and I saw him at a Supermarket one day and decided to say something since I may never have the chance again. I said "Superior" to Coach Grant and stopped dead in his tracks and said"What do you know about Superior"? I then said .... John Ave. He then asked me what I knew about that address. I told him that my dad went to HS with him and I heard the address on the Cannon mess. Coach Grant shook his head and laughed. We then had a great and memorable chat. I was able to meet 1 of 3 NFL Hall of Famers from my home town thanks to Steve Cannon. Thank you Steve. Bob Gella

What A Loss
What a great talent Steve Cannon was. A great voise and an air personality that actually had something to say. He'll be greatly missed.

I worked second shift for 13 years and looked forward to listening to his show each afternoon on my 45 min commute. I missed him when he retired , now I mourn his passing.

After School Friend
Steve Cannon was with me every day after school, from doing my homework to making dinner for my family. Many times it seemed like he was talking right to me. He kept me company while I waited for my mom to get home from work. While my friends listened to WDGY or KDWB, I was stuck on WCCO. What a comfort it was to listen to him every day after school, a constant in the ever-changing world of a teenager. He was radio at its best.

The best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be.
04/07/2009 2:01PM
cannon mess
I gave birth to my first daughter in June of 1982...She was born while I was listening to the Cannon Mess. That August at the State Fair...I visited the CCO radio booth and Cannon was there on the air. I told him I was very pleased that he was with me during labor and delivery . He got a kick out of that...and acknowleged the baby in my arms. Then Mike Lynch handed me that wonderful poster which I have on the wall at my cabin...Jane Carlson Lake Elmo
04/07/2009 2:03PM
Corporate Warmth
No one would appreciate the corporate reply of the station giving him all of 54 words under Local News on this site than the man himself. Way to go CBS! To quote one of Cannon's old KSTP tales, "Don't bodda Hubbard, don't bodda me!"
04/07/2009 2:16PM
Long time friend
It was great fun to know him all these years and be a contributor to the 'Cannon Mess'Someday I hope to see you on the other side. Arthur
04/07/2009 2:24PM
The VOICE
I moved back to this area in 1987 from Phoenix, AZ and didn't completely feel like I was back til I heard the Cannon Mess! I grew up listening to the man and he will be missed!
04/07/2009 2:25PM
The Great Storyteller
Steve Cannon was the greatest. In addition to this insane talent, he was a kind and caring guy. He often checked in with me to make sure I was OK after I left WCCO for a couple of years.I came back to the station the week he retired and was so glad to see him in action before he said "I got the money" for the last time. I've now been blessed to work with two great storytellers, Garrison Keillor and the radio giant who no doubt inspired him, Steve Cannon. My thoughts are with Steve's lovely family. Thanks Steve for sharing your talent with all of us, there will never be another like you.

Paripatetic car washer
I've always loved words and once I was old enough I looked up the meaning of that Paripatetic Car Washer--thanks, Cannon for "staying put" with us and keeping your gang here with you. Your poster still hangs near my mom's laundry room. To the Cannon family--thanks for sharing him with us. What a blessing to be able to make a difference in the world by doing what you love and through it, bringing so much joy to others. MH
04/07/2009 2:48PM
E-mail
Steve Cannon quickly embraced e-mail. I remember e-mailing him twice and both were read on the air. The one I remember was when I took my car to Jiffy Lube, and noticed pictures of local radio personalities (but not Steve's.) I mentioned that in the e-mail, and asked what would have happened had I said "Cannon sent me." Without missing a beat, Morgan Mundane made a sarcastic comment about how they would have charged me double. Classic Cannon material. Since he left, the 3-6 hours have not been the same.
04/07/2009 2:54PM
Thanks Steve
I grew up in western Pennsylvania and listened to Regis Cordig on KDKA radio. He was a riot. When I moved to MN and heard Steve,he reminded of the great slap-stick routines that I grew up with. painting pictures with words. He will be missed. Thanks,Steve,God bless.
04/07/2009 2:55PM
He saved me
In the painfully dysfunctional environment I grew up in, the only time the yelling stopped was when Cannon was on. He saved me.
04/07/2009 2:58PM
Cannon made you feel at home.
We had just moved back to Minnesota and he was there for you every time you needed a friend to listen to.
04/07/2009 3:00PM
Thanks Steve!
I started listening to Cannon as a very young man while riding in the car with Dad as we traveled from Rochester to Gull Lake fishing. I was in fourth grade and I will always remember how big a fan of Steve Dad was. He traveled across MN, the Dakotas and part of WI for work and he often said Steve was his favorite drive along partner. Years later I found myself also driving more then a 100 miles a day for work and I too fondly call Steve my favorite drive along partner. The day he called his last on CCO I took off work, got in my car and headed for Gull Lake, when he said his last goodbye I pulled over and took a few minutes to reflect on what I think is the best of the best on radio. Dad passed away a little more then a year ago, when I heard about Steve passing last night I could not help but smile and think of the great memories I had of listening to Steve as Dad and I made the four hour drive to Gull. Thanks Steve for all the great memories, for being the best there was or likely will be and God Bless your family in this hard time. You made the world a better place!Gary

I GOT THE $ $ $ $ $
Mr. Cannon would end his show with that line....... I asked my Dad while driving home from something why he ended his show with "I got the money?". My Dad said to me, "Because he does". (I loved the annoying dogs barking too!)Like some of the other comments here I also relate Cannon with good times with my Dad who just turned 80..... PLEASE go to the PAVEK MUSEUM of BROADCASTING here in St. Louis Park. Very interesting place for those with an interest in electronics and radio/TV broadcasting like I have been my whole life. And Guys take your Dad with you when you go. Even if only in spirit! 'And tell um Cannon sent ya' TheDetoxGuy.com

A Friend to All
My deepest sympathies to the Cannon Family. What a great person Steve was. I listened to him alot since my husband worked shifts and many times when he was working the P.M. shift Steve Cannon kept me company while I ate my supper alone (especially whenthe last of our three children left for college). Entertainment at its best - he certainly was one in a million. Keep them entertained in heaven!! We will all miss you!!

great loss
I just wanted to say along with everyone else how much we will miss Steve Cannon and the gang. He was the reason I turned on the radio every day. Goodbye, Mr. Cannon
I was very saddened to hear the news early this morning. The Cannon Mess was a staple of the afternoon drive on 'CCO, and you'll be missed, Steve. I was an intern at WCCO-AM in 1996 and 1997. On my last day Steve took the time to open his studio door and wish me the best of luck in my future broadcasting career. I won't ever forget that. Steve: I hope you've still got the money. -Kevin from Minnetonka

I used to help my Dad milk the cows and as all good farmers do, Dad had a radio in the barn. We would listen to Cannon together. The broadcast today has brought back many happy memories of my Dad. Thank you. Judy from Chanhassen

goodbye to a giant!
I listened to Cannon from the early 70's when I was a kid, to when I was in college to being a yong mom in the 1990's. He reminded me of home, where CCO was on from 6 am to 5pm Monday through Friday. He would always make me laugh--and think--as well. He was a genius and I am so glad I got to listen to him all those years. Rest in peace Steve-O

The Cannon Mess
When I was living in Minnesota (Mankato,New Ulm,Worthington)Now I live in Tea South Dakota I enjoyed my afternoons listening to The Mess with Steve, and the little cannons. Some times I'd have to listen to the end of the story sitting in my pickup in the garage. Always loved when his friend Hollywood Insider James St James was on. God Bless his family. Now Steve,Ma,Backlash,Morgan are entertaining in Heaven. He will be Missed.Todd Boots

College Fight Song...
I don't think my mother and I missed one Friday afternoon for five years while we commuted home to the south metro from central minnesota singing along with Steve's "Fight On For All" song. It was our beginning to the weekend as we were "getting out of Dodge". Who could not relate to so many of Steve's "Stevisms"?
04/07/2009 4:29PM
Waitress
I am a server, Steve would come in to see me on occasion. He would stand at the front of the restaurant, straight as straight can be, and would stand there until I came up to greet him in my always cheery, excited way to see him. He would sit down, we would chat a bit, I would make him his favorite hot chocolate, he would eat an english muffin, read the paper and away he would go. I had not seen him for a long while until one day I was in Uptown, driving on an off street because Hennepin was so busy, I slammed on my brakes, jumped out of my car, and we chatted for over an hour. That was the last time I saw him. I feel so lucky to have known such a genuine man who has so much love for his family and his career. His Morgan friend was a spinoff of my other friend who I consider my second father. Paint away Steve, you will remain in my heart and memories forever. God bless to your family. Sincerely, your waitress

What a Classic!! Cannon Mess was the BEST!! Only guy who could put Sid in his place. Use to see Steve-O at PO boxes at local drug store at Franklin and Hennepin, always had a good word. Wondered if he really had German car, then one day saw him at Lunds and walked him out to his car and YES, it was a German car. I started listening to CCO in 1990/91 when the had the Desert Storm briefings. The Cannon Mess came on after and I fell in love with Steve's theme song. I soon warmed up to him also. I was able to get a full recording of the song and later choreographeda tap dance to it. I get choked up every time they have played it today. What a great song, great show and great guy.

Cannon's weather
all of the quotes bring back so many memories, "from the basement studio", one of my favorites was when he did his own weather, he would peer out the dirty basement window, to look up at the grate above... if the 'CCO mendicant was wet, it was raining, or covered in white, it was snowing... thanks for the memories

Steve Cannon was my all-time favorite radio host. When we lived away from Minnesota in the 70's when my husband was in the Air Force, it was always a thrill to get to the Minnesota border and tune in the Cannon Mess and hear Steve's golden voice.

David, I need hits!
I worked at WCCO from 1973 through 1976. Cannon was one of my favorites! Back in those days Cannon use play some tunes during his show, Denny Long was the music director, and I helped out once in a while. It got to a daily ritual that SteveO would come in and say to me "David, I need hits". Well, I was totally afraid to pick a tune, cause I never new what Steve would say. Steve was genuine, he was kind and treated me with all the respect he could even though I was the mail room kid. I will totally miss you Steve, you were my mentor in my future business. You will be missed, may you rest in peace. David Gohl, Shakopee

My dad listened to Stevo while working on buses for the High school. i would find stuff to do in the garage just to listen to Morgan Mundane. i loved him and wondered why he wasn't on the radio when steve was on vacation. When my dad told me he was just a voice i was floored. How could cannon od allthe voices like they were sitting in a bar telling stories together. It was a mess of a show with seamingly no rhymme of reason. He was so good and I wanted him to be my neighbor. I never tire of Stevo Cannon and will buy any CD collection WCCO can put together. I love you Steve Cannon and will miss you and your pals the little Cannons. Say hi to God for me buddy. Entertain him during these tough days.

I grew up in Western North Dakota, and I loved to hear Back Lash La Rue as he talked about Glendive, MT. It always brought a smile to my face. His barking dogs gave me a chuckle as I drove home from work.

The Crew
I was working in Mpls in '84. A coworker and I would listen to Steve and the coworker would bust up laughing when Steve would bet talking with the characters. (I knew it was Steve doing all) and I told him, and he just couldn't belive it till I showed him the 60th anv. book. He and I loved it, we were in our 20's at the time.RIP Steve

Up North
When I moved down to the big town from up north, north of Eveleth, I felt a little lonely from time to time, until I heard Cannon for the first time. Knowing Eveleth well I felt I could relate to him. It helped to make home not seem not so far away. The type of show he produced has so many enjoyable and memorable bits, it was just a joy! I enjoyed listening to Morg on Saturdays. That was a great find when I realized it was a standard part of the Saturday show. I feel fortunate to have been able to listen to Steve's show for a number of years. My prayers go out to Steve's family.

I thought it would last forever. There are things that become part of your life that in my mind should never end. I have been in shock since the Iron man, Ma, Backlash, and the Great Morgan. It all seemed so real. How do you say goodby to this unreachabletalkshow benchmark?

My friend
Steve was my passenger in my car while i drove across west central MN on long boring drives. You were my Companian from four to six for 20 years starting in 1976. My dad had you on his garage raido from 1966 to 1972 when I went into the service. Between KSTP and WCCO you were my best friend for 30 years. God bless you my old friend and your incredible sidekick Morgan Mundane. I still don;t think you two are the same guy.

The Best Has Past on He will be Missed
I remember waiting for Steve-O to sign on the air every day. He always had a way of making the afternoon dduring the drive home most entertaining. I used to wonder how he could change his voice so fast during his conversations W/ the little cannons so fast without making a mistake, such talent. If ever there was a I-Con of radio showmanship Steve was in his words " The King of the kilahertz, prince of the airwaves" It was sad when he retired. And sad now that he has passed. We will miss him dearly.May God bless his family during this difficult time.Jerry,St. Francis, MN.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I listened to Steve Cannon every day after moving to Mpls. I believe he was the best announcer personality I've ever heard. One story I have is about Steve is shortly after moving here after college and listening to him, learned of “Hurly's Hanging Gardens" and this bar had Shuffle Boards. I had played Shuffle Board in the past and wanted to do it again. I called WCCO to find out where Hurly's Hanging Gardens was located. The receptionist, a girl, busted out laughing for 2 minutes - and said there is no Hurly's Gardens.Another know fact is that Mike Lynch received the name Mike Lunch from Steve Cannon.

"late for work"
I remember the time when Cannon had a morning show on Saturday; the anounder was stalling til he got there; then the follow ing Mon. they held court on the Cannon Mess; He was sentenced to listen to 10 hours of Sid's "Sports Hero:Burns Benson

God took one of the best yesterday
What a class act...As he was approaching retirement, I sent a letter to Steve at WCCO extending my well wishes and appreciation to him. To paraphrase the letter, I shared with him that as a child, I used to cringe as my parents would tune into WCCO and I would hear the barking dogs (after all, I would rather listen to some music). However, as I got older and actually "got" him humor, I quickly developed an appreciation for Cannon and his friends in the basement. Several years later, I found myself tuning into WCCO to listen to my friend, Steve-O. Cannon was my commuting buddy and I was sad that he was leaving me. I was honored that during one of his last shows, he read my letter of appreciation on the air and expressed that he would also miss me too. I never had the opportunity to personally meet Steve, but am honored that he was a big part of my life. What a remarkable talent and a man who wasn't afraid to stand up for what he believed in. Sympathies to all who morn his passing. ~Karla

Cannon Has Left, but not in our hearts!
There are so many memories over the years! My Dad and the school closings got me hooked on 'CCO back in the 60's. Cannon was a big part of keeping me here. The Barking Dogs, Morgan, Backlash, Ma, "Animal lore", the prognostications, taking a sip froma "cold boy", etc through "I got the money!" It didn't get much better than the "Mess". Thanks Steve! . . . Phil Bradbury

Man On The Street
Years ago I was a student at Brown and I had gotten permission to visit Franklin Hobbs during his show one evening. Back then CCO had a half hour of news before Hobbs House hit the air. Steve did the night sports segment. I arrived at the CCO door about 10pm, and had called upstairs to be let in. While I was waiting on the dark street, a guy was coming down the street in an old coat with a snap brim cap. Looked a little shady to me. I was uncomfortable..until he looked up..smiled and there was Cannon..and said, you must be Rocky, the kid from Brown. I could hardly speak. This was one of the Gods of WCCO speaking to me. We talked together as we went up the steps, he wished me well..and I never forgot his kindness to a young kid who wanted to be on the radio. RIP Steve and Thanks!

Cannon and the Sports Hero program
I will never forget Cannon introducing Sid and the Sports Hero program one time when Sid was interviewing Archie Griffin of Ohio State. Cannon came on after the interview and stated that Archie had just set the record for the numer of "you-knows" in a2-minute interview. The number was 56. Cannon had no equal.

A piece of my childhood passes...
Along with Steve's passing goes another piece of Minnesota History... As soon as I clicked on the Cannon Mess show bits that Crack Management from the 'Evil Neighbor' posted this morning, I was immediately brought back 15-20 years to my imressionable years. At age-33, I too was introduced to 'CCO as a kid and had every radio tuned in the house on AM at 8-3-0. What would a summer afternoon cutting the grass, the announcement of a thunderstorm, or a winter traffic report be without it put in Steve's well-worn and raspy eloquence? There simply is no equal (sorry, Sid). God Bless Steve, Ma, Morgan, Backlash, and Family & Friends...
04/07/2009 8:30PM
Mr. Cannon, Thank you!
Steve Cannon is a Minnesota icon. I have too many memories to list here. I grew up listening to Steve Cannon and the Cannon Mess. That voice brings back so many great memories. I also recall my High School Journalism class touring WCCO and Cannon taking time to talk with all of us. He was a class act.

A piece of my childhood passes on...
With Steve Cannon's passing so disappears another piece of Minnesota history into the book of Yesteryear. When I awoke this morning and clicked on the Cannon Mess Bits posted on the website by 'Crack Management' at the 'Evil Neighbor' this morning, I was immediately brought back 15-20 years to my youth. What would a warm summer afternoon spent cutting the grass only to come back and here of an impending storm warning, or a winter traffic gridlock spent crawling along 35W if not narrated with Steve's raspy eloquence? Their simple is no other like him, and never will be (sorry, Sid!?) You may have indeed "Got the money", Steve...but we've all got the memories! God Bless Steve, Morgan, Ma, Backlash, and Family & Friends.

A Root Beer Skol ! to SteveO
Prayers to his family and co-workers, and a retroactive thank you to past CCO management for hiring him, Cedric Adams, Clellan Card, & Bill Diehl in the first place. The Mess ranks with 'Bedtime Newz'. Steve, you'll always be a legend, along with Bill, Garrison Keillor, & Dan Donovan.

He was cool before his time!
After hearing Steve’s deep voice and quick wit on the radio for the first time, I was hooked! He truly defined the word cool. He was cool before his time. I used to think…if only I were 20 years older! : )I’ll miss you Mr. Cannon. God bless you, andthanks for the memories. Sue from St. Michael

I don't go back as far as some posting here, but I do remember getting my butt handed to me by Steve-O every ratings period back in the 90's. Every 3 months, my boss would tell me that my goal in afternoon drive should be number 2. I listened to airchecks then, and as I listen now I ask myself the same question: How the hell did he do that?? You were a true talent Steve.

Going Home with Cannon
In the prime of my life I loved to listen to Cannon. He was the stability on the air that you could listen to whether you had a good day or bad. It was a drive-time escape that took you out of the funk that an awful day at work could often deliver. Weneed genuine people like Steve more than ever. Thanks for being a daily friend and helping all of us appreciate that we shouldn't take ourselves too seriously. Thanks Steve-O

Life phases
When Steve Cannon retired I sent him a note about how he had been with me throughout my life phases. In high school I listened to him in early morning, finishing my homework quick before catching the school bus. The outfit of the day, was a highlight. I, like many took a long time to know just who the little Cannons really were. In the 80's when the dogs' theme song came on in the afternoons it signaled to my preschool boys that "the puppy song" meant dad was coming home from work soon. I loved the Friday afternoon prognostigations with of course the Fight on for Ol. Hearing Steve still give us some sports on Sat. mornings this winter was very special. He was warm and genuine.I was thrilled to hear that Steve had acknowledged my retirement note on the air the week he left his afternoon show, and devistated to not hear it personally. What a part of all of our lives Steve Cannon was!

radio class assignment
My late husband Frank was a professor at Southwest State University. To give his radio students a broader perspective, he would assign them to listen to Steve Cannon. Our own children listened to the Iron Range dogs many a time. Once, when we were dining at Vescios in Dinkytown, Steve and wife came in. All through dinner my husband resisted the temptation to go over and talk to him, but as we were leaving he gave in, went over and told Steve how much he enjoyed his program and about assigning him as a listening exercise for his students. Steve was gracious, of course.

God Bless the Cannon Mess
I, as many who have paid tribute today grew up with Steve Cannon with my Dad. I had to stay at work for an evening pep band performance for the football game the day of Cannons last broadcast. I had no where to go, so I sat and listened to Cannon's final show in my truck. He has been and will be missed. He made us smile and laugh. Chris in Brainerd

Cannon Mess
My mom had WCCO on everyday when I was growing up in the 70's and 80's. So the Cannon Mess was very much part of our household. We used to go out of state on trips, and one of the signs you knew you were home, was listening to those dogs and the voiceof Steve, Ma and the rest of the gang. Even in college, I tried to make sure I listen to those dogs. Rest in peace Steve.

Former Eveleth School Superintendent
Steve was a legend and a daily companion for me all his years at WCCO. I met Steve for the first time as 13 year old during a tour of the KSTP Television and Radio Studios on University Avenue (his famous "Boulevard of Broken Hearts".) Since I was growing up in rural Minnesota, doing farm work in the barn was a big part of my life, and listening to radio kept my mind occupied while doing mundane work. His stories of life, growing up on the Iron Range became so real to me, as later in life, in the first half of the 1980's I became the Superintendent of Schools in Steve's hometown of Eveleth. I was able to see and touch the bass drum of the Eveleth City Band in the Band Hall of Eveleth Schools, I thought about what it was like to see the Eveleth City Band under the direction of "Congenial Emil Stern" conductor of the band. I wandered the upper floors of Eveleth High School, the former location of the Eveleth Junior College and thought about the stories Steve told of his days at EJC. I heard stories told by the good citizens of Eveleth talking about their famous son. Great stories and great pride! My career brought me back to the Twin Cities and I continued to enjoy Steve nearly every day on WCCO Radio and was deeply saddened at the time of his retirement. He had such wit, wisdom, and a caring human demeanor, a true "mensch". In later years I met his son Bart and employed him as a teacher, the spirit, wisdom, and kindness I heard for half my life on the radio, was truly past on to his wonderful son. Wisdom, intelligence, and wit is nearly gone with rare exceptions on commercial radio. Steve and few others opened my world growing up in rural Minnesota with out television, and listening to Steve helped me learn to speak without a heavy german accent. Steve's clear articulate words made it possible for me to become a teacher and school district administrator, My heart goes out to Steve's family, I hope you know the difference he made for one fellow Minnesotan who became a learner absorbing his wisdom. Thank you, Stan

Headed home with "the Cannon"
It was always a great way to end a work day and the best way to start a weekend. Cruising down the boulevard with "the Cannon" on a Friday, "the best day of the week", will be remembered with a smile. Thanks a million, Steve-O.
04/07/2009 11:48PM
For My Father, Too.
My late father listened to Cannon on 'CCO every day on his way home from work. He never failed to walk the house without mentioning something about the show that had made him laugh after a long day. He loved the Minnesota Rouser, but his favorite was always "Fight on for old!" So here's to Cannon and his crew of voices. Fight on for dear old, old, old!" What'dey say?
04/08/2009 12:35AM
I loved SteveO
My heart broke today to hear of Steve Cannon's passing. Where do the years go? Then my heart warmed as I heard clips & his strong, ever-soothing voice again entered the airways. It felt like he was talking to us today. His stories are just as relevant & intriguing. Thank WCCO for so graciously sharing w/ his sorrowfilled friends, his audience. My memories, too many to start. Rarely did I miss a show, my Dad always had CCO on (made me miss Dad much today too). I was hooked on the Cannon Mess, marrying young, living in the country, raising kids w/ my own chaotic mess going on about that time of day. I could count on Steve to fill that void, to bring a sort of stability to the day w/ the familiar phrases & that soothing, sexy voice. Dogs barking as the coldest part of winter set in or while sweating in non-aired heat of summer, Steve entered our homes invited us in, & transported us out of our daily grind. His cast of characters were REAL, they are, like Dave Lee said, you could visualize the people & places (what a God-given talent) & the whole experience felt warm, like you were a part of it & you had a place to go. Thank you Steve for taking us to your great "theater of the mind", for the wonderful stories, & telling it like it is w/ the bit of irreverence to crack management. Management could consider running Steve's tapes on special occasions on the overnight & skip the syndicated show. Or compiling, per family permission, so we may again experience the warmth & feel & the richness of the moment w/ Steve. My deepest sympathy to his wife & family, we will miss him & we all loved him! My Uncle
My favorite uncle died many years ago now. He was a salesman who traveled in his car hours a day. WCCO radio was his constant companion and Steve Cannon was his best friend. Everytime I heard Steve et al all those years later, it would bring a smile to my face remembering my uncle. I smile now knowing my uncle now has the pleasure of meeting "the whole family" and getting to know them again. Nina

What A Mess
Steve Cannon was the leader of a radio family. I always felt that he was one of us and looked forward to his voice and comments. I am especially happy for steve in that he retired on his own terms. If he had decided to stay at the Evil Neighbor until nowhe would most certainly have been fired for "economic reasons" as have many other listener favorites this past year.
04/08/2009 8:05AM
Steve 'O
was a treat to hear the " Cannon Mess." I did wonder where "Hurleys Hanging garden " was ...supposedly in Nordeast. The little Cannon's, the 'Prognogistation's Always clear pronounciations having been in some school of eloquiton. His clear voice, the 'cough button'. One of the Best announcers ...
04/08/2009 8:48AM
Faithful Listener-Sandy F
There are so few radio announcers that have a voice like Steve Cannon. Besides being blessed with a voice and personality we all grew to love, he had many of us fooled for a long time that his characters were real people. I thought it was him only because they always went on vacation during the Minnesota State Fair! I have missed him on the radio since the day he retired, but I'm glad he got to enjoy his retirement! My thoughts are with his family and their loss.

A sad farewell
In 1963 through 1965 or so, I lived with a roommate at a remote resort near Ely and awoke early mornings to Steve Cannon on the "Boulevard of Broken Hearts". KSTP was the only radio station we could get out there. Steve gave the "uniform of the day" each day, including one for the "woiking goils". I enjoyed him down here since then and sent him a card when he retired, the same year as I did. Ma, Backlash and Morgan gave us all comic relief, a great gift. WCCO was a "good neighbor" during his years. This age needs more Steve Cannons. I hope you'll play the "Fight Song" and the "Barking Dogs" some time. How I miss him.
04/08/2009 8:51AM

I started listening when driving my mother-in-law shopping. She introduced me to the Cannon Mess - oh how she laughed when she realized I thought they were all different people. She loved you Steve - say hi to Ev for me, miss you both. Liz

Pleasant memories
I started listening to Mr. Cannon when I moved to St. Paul in 196o's. Yes, there was the little black dress and heels on Friday's (still have a little black dress). I heard your last report on Saturday morning with Charlie Boone and will miss your wonderful voice as well as your sense of humor. May you rest in peace, it is all your fans who have lost a great friend,

fooled me for years!
I was banished to another state for many years because of my husband's job, so when I came back to Minnesota for a visit the very first thing I did was turn on WCCO. It meant home! I'd be driving along in the afternoon and hear Cannon and his friends, and I truly thought the show had four or five people on it! It wasn't until I moved back here years later and was able to listen to the show regularly that I realized it was one man! He was an entertainer par excellance and I missed him when he went off the air. I'm sure he has a new gig now, though.

Missing Steve
I am from Eveleth and LOVED listening to Steve and hearing the references to Eveleth tossed in with those of other great places like Hurley's Hanging Gardens. I've missed his show since he retired and wish that you could leave this page up forever so we could go back and listen to him again and again. My condolences to Harold and Nanook of the Norge...

Story Teller Extraordinary
I moved in 1994 to Minnesota from Oklahoma and fell in love with the Cannon Mess. Listened everyday. Stevo was the best at telling stories (even when I disagreed with his point of view). I'm back in Oklahoma now. Yesterday morning, I was thinking about Stevo as I listened to a friend tell a story. I thought, wow, what could Stevo do with this? Then I learned the next morning that Stevo had passed. I was shocked. But, I'll always remember the a story teller that I'll ranked with Mark Twain in his style and clarity. Thanks for the ride Stevo. Thom in Oklahoma

Great Memories
My father listened to Steve's show on a regular basis. As I was growing up, listening to his show is something that I enjoyed doing with my father. We always made sure that we were tuned in on Friday evenings to listen to Morgan's prognostications. Listening to his show was like having a conversation with an old friend. The world is a lesser place today.

The Voice
I always thought the Ted Baxter character on the Mary Tyler-Moore show appeared to be doing a bad imitation of Steve Canon when he said, "Hi, guys!" Was that an attempt to be Minnesotan by the MTM show? Just wondering.

Tears
I never had tears for someone I didn't know until yesterday when I heard the news. When we left the Twin Cities to move to Grand Rapids I had a car that could not pick up Steve or'CCO. I went out and test drove new rides based on their ability to pick up Steve. A few years later I had a terrible job working for a miserable boss in Brainerd 80 miles from Grand Rapids. Driving home with Steve saved me from disaster. I can't think of any media person who had such an impact on me. Thanks Steve, Morgan and crew. FWA

Thankyou Steve
When I have the need to visit my childhood roots, I either hop in the car and drive to my once quaint Brooklyn Center neighborhood, or go down memory lane in my head, it never fails -WCCO Radio ends up on my radio or I listen to it online as the radio airwaves don't travel up this far north. Steve, and ALL of the personel on the air at 'CCO, are so much appreciated. You have all helped us grasp that part of life that is so necessary, yet hard to put into words. Thank you, Steve. Thank you, WCCO. Barb in Bemidji

So Long Steve-O
I grew up listening to WCCO in my Dad's blacksmith's shop, in the tractor, and everywhere else. WCCO had some great personalities; Boone & Erickson, Joyce Lamont, Howard Viken, and of course at 3:00 the dogs would do it again bringing on Steve and the Little Cannon's. When the dogs started barking, the volume when up, and attention turned to what Steve, Morg, Ma, and Backlash had today. Cannon had the ability to make anyone sound great on the radio. He was missed when he retired and missed even more as the years went by and the basement studio remained silent. To Steve many thanks for all you gave over the years. To his family, my heartfelt sympathies. So Long Steve-OKurt R - Tea SD.

Miss "The Mess"
For years Steve Cannon made my lengthy central MN commute fly by. Also being a native Evelethian I found a special bond with Steve and all the references to our hometown. Talk about a lot of laughs but at the same time a feeling of pride. Thank you Steve. My thoughts and prayers are with your family. Tony Malevich

Heartache for Steve, his family and all of his fan family
The man will be so missed. What an awesome talent! My dear late Mom also was a devoted listener and she would send me tapes she made of the Cannon Mess when I was homesick and living in Seattle. I still have those tapes. It was so good to hear Steve O and the gang with Charlie on Sat mornings. That was and still is a treasure, but a very big part of us is gone. Steve O is now entertaining our loved ones who have gone before and who got us hooked on the Cannon Mess...and they are all having a great time! My thoughts and prayers to Steve's family. Thanks Steve O, we have all the great memories. Another old fan

70 YO Fan
When I was a teenager, I joined his "Girl Watchers Club" and got sent the offcial membership card. Years later I got to meet him at a dinner and he gave me the "Suit City" patch and told me to sew it inside my suitcoat. What an inventive and humerous man. Virgil

State Fair
It was 1978 or 1979, my wife was making an egg dish at the Dairy Building so I walked over to see Cannon about 4:00 p.m. The place was deserted, just about only me and Steve. I think Steve hated the fair. He said let's talk to a fairgoer. I answeredwith an impersonation of Nelson Rockefeller. Steve's eye's lit up and he played along. We had a blast. What a great guy! Great Memories
I live in southern Minnesota & worked in an office that allowed the radio to broadcast WCCO, In 1995 I went to a new job in a building that did not get AM reception. I was heartbroken that I could no longer listen to the Cannon Mess. On a rare day when I was home during the week, I was out digging up dandylions listening to Cannon. He obviously thought he was off the air because he was irritated at something & said the 'effenheimer' word. I couldn't believe it! I called my husband at work. It was so funny. He sdaid in a later broadcast that he was not aware that it aired until later that night he walked into (I can't remmeber where)and they all broke into applause. My husband's uncle married a Cossalter from Eveleth so I got to hear great stories from his former classmates. Even though I only met him once I feel like he was, as Sig would say, a close personal friend. I no longer live in Mn but through the internet I have been able to celebrate his life with everyone. RIP Mr. Cannon

Cannon Still Lives
I still listen to the Cannon Mess through the Pavek site and Radiotapes. I'm 32, and there will never be a better drive time host than Cannon. It was, is, and still be the best of AM radio; Dave Moore, Steve Cannon, Shelby, Magers, Douglas, Miles, Speake, Davis, and Speake - all represent the best of Minnesota story telling.

Last of the great ones
I tried as much as I could to be in my car at 3pm for the Cannon Mess. Here in northern MN you had to make sure the hilss were not in the way. Once a ranger always a ranger. The great one will be missed.

The Day the Dogs Stopped Barking
So many wonderful memories of Steve and his stories. I have two favorites. (Submitted separately) I remember the days of Syd's Suit City located in Seven Corners, where men could find the latest fashion in the Adoph Menjou Room. This bit, which ran for a long period of time, was capped when each of the billboards that were located in 7 Corners had a full billboard-sized ad for Cyd's Suit City, and, of course, one entire billboard featured the Adoph Menjou Room. We laughed so hard we had to stop the car and get out to look at every inch of those billboards. Only Steve had to the power accomplish billboards for a place where only Morgan, Backlash and their friends could shop!Oh, Steve, you were one in a million and even today the loss of you brings a lump to my throat and more than a tear. All sympathy and good wishes to your family. Betsy Mitchell (please forgive the spelling of names; I was too young to know AdophMenjou! Betsy Mitchell

Best Show
The greatest Cannon show that I listened to was sometime in 1978 0r 79. Steve didn't show up that night it was just Ma and Morgan. I loved that show. I will miss him. I did my barn chores with Steve on the radio from the time he started at WCCO until the day he retired.

Steve Cannon -- Color Guy
One hundred years ago, Steve did color for the Gopher football games with Clayton Tonnimaker. Steve was hilarious, and sometimes, more entertaining than the game! When the game situation called for the quarterback to take a knee, Steve would always, always, say, "Well, folks, it's time for the old Eveleth 99 play. That's where the quarterback clutches the ball to his chest, curls into the fetal position and falls to the eaerath." To this day, if we know this play is about to occur, my husband and I will turn to each other and one will say, "It's time for the old Evelyth 99!" Steve, your stories were so vivid that even now, I can close my eyes and hear you. Betsy Mitchell

It was like de ja vu (all over again)
Thank you, 'CCO, for sharing all the wonderful clips of Cannon moments. As I was playing them yesterday while I was sewing, my son came home from school. I later realized this was a de ja vu moment never to be experienced again. My son, of the YouTube and texting era, now encountered one sweetest experiences of my many childhood memories: Walking in the door from school, with Cannon on the radio, as I did many years ago - with Barking Dogs and all. As so many have commented here, that is a warm and fuzzy feeling those of us who experienced it, know it, but cannot really put it into words.Today's advanced technology and media cannot compare to the creative genius and cleverly crafted works like Cannon's in the previous talk radio world. It's a shame the next generation won't know what they missed.

Morgan was real!
A few of us were having coffee before work one morning in the late 70s and we were discussing the upcoming Vikings game. One woman remarked that she heard Steve Cannon say that he thought the Vikes would win but that other guy - Morgan Mundane - on his program thought they would lose. I tried to tell her that Morgan didn't really exist - he was one of Steve Cannon's voices - but she was adamant that Morgan was real - and looked at me like I had just stepped off the turnip truck. Maybe I had.

Oh For a Book
Of all of Steve's many talents, I think his story telling ability was at the top. He entertained us with tales about his experiences and associations. When he retired I hoped he would write a book about those experiences but now that's up to someone else. Thanks Steve for the many years of great entertainment. The Canon Mess will live on in my memory. Jon, a guy from Superior Jon

a time of growth
I remember being a young college boy, exploring the new world of acadamia, at Southwest state in Marshall. Learning all about love, listening to to supertramp, ambrosia, all the new music of the day, yet we would always turn on 'cco, to hear the "mess", What a great show, what a great personality, what a great memory! Class has no boundaries, talent stretches across the generations. Memories never fade!

The Cannon Mess
Wow, how sad to lose such an icon in radio. He kept me entertained during the 1970's and 1980's, while my mother cooked supper in the kitchen on our farm north of Little Falls, MN. He kepted me entertained on trips to and from north Minneapolis, where my mother was from. Thans for the memories of the barking dogs, the Eveleth rouser song, the Little Cannons of Morgan Mundane, Ma Linger, and Backlash Larue. And thank you Charlie Boone for having him on your Saturday Morning show while I lived in downtown Excelsior! Rest in Peace, Steve-O! My condolences to his family. Sincerely, Claudette Moran

Remembering Cannon
I drove home with Steve Cannon for years. Loved all his characters, Hurley's hanging gardens. It was wnderful to here his theme song and all his famous lines. Many years ago I brought my Boy scout troop down to tour WCCO radio studio, Cannon was on the air. We were told we had to be very quiet and not to tell anyone about what we saw. There were alot of people that really believed Ma, Morgan and Backlash were real. That just attest to Cannon's great talent. It was a sad day when he left the airwaves, it is much sadder that he is no longer with us. Rita Ranfranz

Retirement
At 61, I grew up with WCCO all of my life. I know that I drove my college roommates crazy with CCO coming on at 5AM every day. I loved listening then just as I love listening now. There isn't more that can be said about Steve Cannon's wonderful personalities and his voice that haven't already been said. I just wanted to add that I was truly disappointed when I found out that he retired to Florida after talking all of those years about retiring "up nort". I missed the station's memories for which I am truly sorry. From SW Minnesota Sheila

Cannon Mess & Farm Stories
It was with great sadness that I heard the news about Steve Cannon's passing. It also got me thinking about all the fun times I had as a kid growing up on the farm and hearing the "Cannon Mess" on the radio in the barn during milking time. His voice seemed to calm the cows as we went through the routine of milking and feeding. One funny story is that the cows would become so used to hearing his voice that they wouldn't even enter the barn unless the radio was tuned to WCCO. Being a young kid at the time I would turn on another station that played rock music. But, the cows would not enter the barn until I turned the station. It's quite a humerous site to see 60 head of cattle standing outside the barn door afraid to come in because the radio is on the wrong channel! Thanks for the many memories, Steve. May you rest in peace. Chad Pettit

I am from Eveleth and really enjoyed all of his references to our town. Liked hearing about other great spots such as Hurley's Hanging Gardens, too. Gone, but not forgotten
I remember listening to the Cannon Mess for many a year in our dairy barn. You knew what line was comung, but you loved it anyhow. Ma Linger"the poor man's Faye Dunawaye" Morg and Lash were all welcome visitors. The Eveleth City Band playing the world's greatest fight song, Point of Law, and being urged by Steve-o to clear the supper dishes and march around the kitchen table as he played his once a week song.(It's a Heartache or Feels So Good were favorites. You were a classic my friend, not to be repeated. I Really Remember Steve
I remember when he was Wrangler Steve on TV. I remember when Black Bart locked him in a closet and kids had to write in to get him out. Most wrote (including me) to keep him in the closet (in fun, of course). While going to the "U" I listened to him when he was "On the Boulevard of Broken Hearts". He had more characters and places then. His dream was to go to WCCO and do the hockey games with Al Shaver. Wow, what a legend!

I Remember Steve
I go way back to when he was "Wrangler Steve" on TV. I remember when "Black Bart" locked him in a closet. Kids had to write in to get him out, but most (including me) wrote in to keep in in (just for fun, of course). I listened to him in the morning while I was going to the U. He was "On the Boulevard of Broken Hearts" then. He had more characters and places then (Ole's Mo Mart, the Sweatsock Bowl). His dream was to go to WCCO and broadcast the hockey games with Al Shaver. His dream came true. He never did retire to KBUM in Baudett, as far as I know. I miss Steve.

He Morphed
I remember hearing Steve Cannon on Mom's kitchen radio all thru the '70's. He was kinda of a jerk when it came to women. Then, when I listened again in the '90's he had morphed into a mello old man, and then I liked him. I attribute the change to his becoming a Grandfather. Once he had a granddaughter little girls could do no wrong. Lash LaRue was the first gay guy I ever knew. If Steve-o could llike him than so could I. Love and warm wishes, SueZspace

WCCO Radio CD Memories?
Hey Everyone. Don't you think it would be a great idea for WCCO to compile a CD of excerpts from "The Cannon Mess" as well as audio clips of "The Boone & Erickson Show" and other archived past shows? Think about all those funny jokes and radio skits. Keeping the memories alive, keeping the tradition and legacies, and helping our Good Neighbor WCCO Radio. All those in favor, send an email or letter to the "Crack Management Team" at WCCO. Come on everyone. This would be a great opportunity to help preserve radio's fine tradition. Remember, Radio cannot go far enough. Thank you WCCO for providing us with such great talent throughout the years. Steve Cannon and all the others, are a Midwestern treasure!

Greatest Ever
I was a faithfull listener for 40 years, first on KSTP, then on cco for 26 years. I feel fortunate to be able to meet Steve-o through mutual friends, and found he was in person just as on he radio. He and the litle Cannons were funny and entertaining and made a bad day into a good one. There will truly never be another. God bless Steve and the family. Bob Haugh

So glad I discovered this memorial page. Every time I hear someone call Target "Tar-zhay" I think of Cannon, for I believe he (or Ma Linger or Backlash) used it first. He used to make my many drive from the Cities to Faribault fun. He was the best in radio!

King of Animal Lore on US Radio
Steve Cannon was a master of his craft. He was a genius at weaving stories among his commercials and making it all entertaining. He made you believe that he was telling each story just for you. When he retired, it was like losing a family member. You left work or school and listened to him on the way home. He joined us for supper, too, with the Little Cannons. Rest in peace, Steve O, we know that "you got the money" before you left us.

Thank you from John Kammerud
I grew up in the small town of Dresser, Wisconsin, and like many of the comments already made, I listened to WCCO because that is the station my parents listened to at home and on the car radio. I resolved to never listen to that station, but once I was on my own living many miles away from the St. Croix valley, I found myself trying to find CCO on the dial. While living in Monticello, Wisconsin, near the Illinois border from 1976 -80, I would get in the station after work (it would fade in and out), but the voice of Cannon was hard to miss. I grew to love his cast of characters. When I moved to Central Wisconsin near Marshfield in 1980, I could easily pick up Cannon on my way home from work. In fact, I tried to never miss him. As another commentator said, Cannon had the great ability to give a "sense of home" to the Twin Cities and to the entire area. As a small town guy, I loved his stories about the "range." I also loved his days when he gave the weekend sports on KSTP television. I will always remember his signature: "Hello from Nor-East Minneapolis where everything swings and not everyone has their own bar!"Good-bye to a real straight shooter.

The Mess will be Missed
Wow ... I'm in shock. I just found out tonight that one of my favorites is no more. I now live in Rochester, NY but I used to enjoy listening to Steve-O when I lived in Rochester, MN ... always got a kick out of Ma Linger! (Morgan & Backlash were pretty good too, come to that.) Cannon always brought a smile to my ears, and I'm sure he had the same effect on all of his listeners. He will truly be missed. God Bless, Steve-O. Mike W., Rochester, NY

There are so manay memories...
but here are a couple: When, at management “request,” the length of his show was stretched an hour for a time to run from 3 to 7pm instead of his usual 3 to 6 he started he began identifying himself as “Steve Cannon…the Marathon Man!” I’ll also never forget how, in the early 70’s, he would “walk up” the 4:30 CBS News feature by describing, in meticulous detail with words to this effect, the arrival of “a gleaming black limousine, out of which steps the distinguished looking gentlemen garbed in a finely tailored suit and matching, flowing black cape. He confidently enters the doors at 625 Second Avenue South. acknowledging with a nod the girl at the candy counter. As if on queue, the door to the elevator opens and he steps inside for his brief one floor ride to the second floor lobby. He steps out, tipping his left hand to the receptionist as saunters silently and gracefully into the Franklin Hobbs Memorial studio. In one sweeping motion he slides the cape off his shoulder, throws it over the bust of Franklin Hobbs and slides comfortably into the waiting chair in front of the microphone, clears his throat and says…” (at which time the network broadcast would seamlessly begin) “This is Douglas Edwards with the CBS Evening News Roundup….” Sometimes the recounting narrative would last 30 seconds, sometimes three minutes or more. It was always pure Cannon. We’ll miss you, Steve-O! And look forward to an eternity of a heavenly Cannon Mess in the great up-yonder! Paul Johnson

A Minnesota Legend
His voice was of intelligence and confidence. His characters lived in our hearts and minds. He was the know-it-all…who kind of knew-it-all. His humor, subtly, wrapped around his thoughts and made us smirk. He chose his words carefully and he certainly would not mince them. He seemed so tough that if he was your dad, you would really have to toe the line, and in our insolence we knew he was right. Though he didn’t show his softer side to often—we were always waiting for that glint of inner kindness, which we knew, lined his soul. He made us feel like we actually had a cool, smart, successful friend who always had time for us. How he made us love commercial----know one else ever has or ever will do that again. For his immediate family and his massive media family: We must take all the beautiful confidence, virtues and talents, which we could take for granted, and entwine them into our lives to make this world a better place. This is how he can continue to live. He was an incredible human being. You are more than missed, those of us who knew you and loved you are still trying to find someone to replace you…therefore the hole is forever there. He will never leave our heart.

Cannon to be dearly missed!
I'm sorry to hear the news. Sad to see not even Cannon's golden body as he refered to it so often could withstand the fate we all will face one day. He left so many lasting memories. Although I never met him in person, I feel like so many that we knew him well. I moved from the area over twenty years ago. It was always a thrill on a return visit to tune in and relive the joy of his show. Among others, I'll miss his intimate descriptions of something that everyone knew was a buildup to a punchline. We'd all be finely tuned by the time that would happen with perfect timing, then he'd immediately go to a commercial leaving us laughing out loud. It was nice to hear him for gopher hockey too. He exemplified what we all strive for: to do a job we love and to be an inspiration to others. Thank you for all the over-the-air good times Cannon. Daniel J.

Those were the days
I remember as a little kid growing up in Worthington MN and listening to the Cannon Mess. My dad would pick me up from school everyday and hearing the dogs barking song made me think of Cannon Mess. I would listen everyday with my dad and to this day I always thought that Morgan, Ma and Backlash were real until the last show when my dad said it was Steve all along. He was a pioneer and will be missed

Padded cell
I first met Steve when I and my friends would visit the Padded Cell night club on E. Lake Street...This was back in the early 60's and Steve would be the charmer with the patrons and didn't care for the loud people...I first heard Steve when he and Leigh Cammon would do the afternoon drive show on WLOL before he went to KSTP on the "Avenue of Broken Hearts."
