Groups Have Statewide Push To Increase Recycling

Minnesotans recycle about 41 percent of their trash, but a pair of state agencies say that needs to increase to keep up with the increasing volume of waste.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the Recycling Association of Minnesota have launced a statewide push to increase recycling to 50 percent of trash by 2011.

The "Recycle MORE Minnesota" effort is a media campaign aimed at telling Minnesotans why recycling is important for everyone in the state. Ads will appear on the radio, at movie theaters, in print and through other channels.

The MPCA says Minnesota's recycling rate is second-best in the nation, but it hasn't increased significantly for the past 10 years.

That means that about 1.3 millon tons of paper, plastic, glass and other recycleable materials end up in the trash every year.
